Consulting to charities

The Worshipful Company of Management Consultants (WCoMC), CMCE’s parent organisation, is heavily involved in providing pro bono consultancy to charities and pro bono mentoring for charity managers.  As WCoMC is a Modern Livery Company, its members are closely involved in the profession as active management consultants, mentors and coaches.  The most effective way that they can give back to Society is by using their expertise in volunteering to help the non-profit sector.  In 2004 WCoMC also partnered with Cass Business School (now City University of London Business School) to set up the Centre for Charity Effectiveness (CCE).

WCoMC therefore has a considerable reservoir of expertise in consulting to charities and other not-for-profit organisations.  CMCE aims to make this expertise available in a new domain set up in the Knowledge Bank on the CMCE website, ‘Consulting to charities’.

Our initial offer in this domain includes an introduction to consulting to charities that includes links to some of the most important relevant resources, the NCVO Knowhow database of online resources for charity managers and ‘Tools for Success’, a set of guides for small voluntary and community organisations prepared by CCE.  We also provide a link to a set of case studies of WCoMC members’ projects for charities.  Other items in the domain include an article on the difference between outputs and outcomes, an essential distinction for effective charity management, and an introduction to a highly effective approach to driving impact developed by Impetus-PEF, a partner organisation of WCoMC.

Sadly, the Covid-19 pandemic has made many not-for-profit organisations unviable.  The remaining item in our ‘Consulting to charities’ domain introduces the subject of how to manage the closure of a charity.

We aim to supplement the ‘Consulting to charities’ domain with further items providing relevant high-quality advice as we identify them.
