Consulting to charities

An introduction to online resources for consulting to charities

The Worshipful Company of Management Consultants (WCoMC), CMCE’s parent organisation, is heavily committed to providing both pro bono consultancy and mentoring support to charities and their senior staff.  In 2004 WCoMC also partnered with Cass Business School (now The Business School, City, University of London) to set up the Centre for Charity Effectiveness (CCE), which has gone on to become one of the leaders of international academic study of the sector.

One of CCE's early projects, the design and implementation of the Knowhow Nonprofit web resource, was project managed by WCoMC.  This was subsequently transferred to NCVO and rebranded NCVO Knowhow.  NCVO Knowhow is an extensive database of online resources for charity managers providing advice on a wide range of topics covering all the important aspects of managing a charity.  It is continually updated and now includes a substantial section on aspects of charity management affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

In parallel, CCE developed Tools for Success, a set of guides for small voluntary and community organisations, funded by the City Bridge Trust.  The set consists of 13 guides:

  1. Introduction;
  2. Self-assessment;
  3. Compliance;
  4. Governance;
  5. Direction;
  6. Finance;
  7. People;
  8. Operations;
  9. Connect;
  10. Step change;
  11. Impact assessment;
  12. Social investment;
  13. Cost recovery.
