Consulting to charities

An introduction to online resources for consulting to charities

The Worshipful Company of Management Consultants (WCoMC), CMCE’s parent organisation, is heavily involved in providing pro bono consultancy to charities.  It has contributed to two initiatives that now offer resources for charity managers and consultants working with them:

NCVO Knowhow is an extensive database of online resources for charity managers providing advice on a wide range of topics covering all the important aspects of managing a charity.  It is continually updated and now includes a substantial section on aspects of charity management affected by the coronavirus pandemic.  NCVO Knowhow was originally developed by the Centre for Charity Effectiveness (CCE) at City University of London Business School (formerly Cass Business School) with the support of WCoMC, before being taken over by NCVO.

CCE has developed a set of guides for small voluntary and community organisations, Tools for Success, funded by the City Bridge Trust.  The set consists of 13 guides:

  1. Introduction;
  2. Self-assessment;
  3. Compliance;
  4. Governance;
  5. Direction;
  6. Finance;
  7. People;
  8. Operations;
  9. Connect;
  10. Step change;
  11. Impact assessment;
  12. Social investment;
  13. Cost recovery.

CCE was originally formed in 2004 through a partnership between Cass Business School and the WCoMC.
